Melaline® Scientific Studies

Melaline® Scientific Studies

Melaline® is a scientifically studied keratin complex shown to boost natural pigmentation, tanning, and skin radiance. Research highlights enhanced hydration, elasticity, and UV protection for visibly healthier skin.

Inspired by melanin, the body’s own natural pigment, Melaline® is a patented keratin complex and a key ingredient in our Natural Glow formula. Extensive research shows that Melaline® can bolster the skin’s melanin stores and support pigmentation and tanning, helping to achieve healthy-looking radiance all year round.

This scientifically studied and naturally pigmented keratin complex significantly enhances the existing melanin already present in the skin’s layers and is derived from responsibly sourced black sheep’s wool, naturally rich in melanin.

"But it’s far more than a pigment source. This intelligent, innovative complex supports the skin’s ability to tan, defend itself from UV damage and maintain hydration and elasticity."

In fact, Melaline® has been found to prepare skin for sun exposure and promote a more even, radiant complexion while strengthening the skin's natural defences against oxidative stress and inflammation.

Extensive research of Melaline® has led to compelling results, including:

  • A 106% increase in the skin's melanin content
  • 225% rise in skin pigmentation
  • 248% increase in skin darkness
  • And more hydrated, firmer & brighter skin.

Explore the research and findings from two independent studies in more detail below…

STUDY 1

Dermscan scientific study (2015).
Study source: subject to peer review.

How was it conducted?

  • 33 individuals aged 19 to 46 took a 500mg Melaline® dose per day for 48 consecutive days, while another group of 33 individuals aged 20 to 58 took 650mg.
  • Recordings were measured at days 10, 20, 30 and 48
  • The study was carried out in winter, and participants had not been exposed to UV in the months before.

What benefits were they seeking?

The study set out to assess how Melaline® could affect the skin’s melanin production, pigmentation and protective responses.

What did they find?

Both of the Melaline® doses assessed showed significant results, demonstrating:

INCREASED PIGMENTATION & TANNING

The 500mg/day dose:

  • Increased skin pigmentation by 100% after 30 days
  • And tanning by 90% after 48 days.

While the 650mg/day dose:

  • Increased skin pigmentation by 250%
  • And increased tanning by 217% after 30 days.

RAPID MELANIN RESPONSE

After just 10 days, both dosages increased melanin availability and skin intensity. Even after only two hours of UVA exposure:

  • There was a 106% rise in melanin rate
  • 225% increase in pigmentation
  • and a 248% increase in skin darkening.

IMMEDIATE PROTECTION

After UVA exposure, Melaline® leads to a quick movement of melanin to the skin's surface, enhancing immediate protection.

ENHANCED DELAYED TANNING

After repeated UVA and UVB exposures over 30 days, the skin gradually darkened by 249%, while the melanin rate increased by up to 217%.

IMPROVED SKIN QUALITY

Melaline® also influences skin regeneration, improving:

  • Brightness
  • Elasticity
  • Hydration levels
  • Antioxidant activity.
  • Antioxidant + anti-inflammatory benefits

With an 84% recommendation score, perception scores across both studies were equally impressive with:

  • 93% of participants were satisfied with the results
  • 81% found their skin more pigmented, brighter, hydrated & firmer
  • And 76% of participants said that they’d continue uptake.

STUDY 2

In vitro efficacy study: An evaluation of pigmenting, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities and the penetration of an active ingredient by using a model of in vitro reconstructed human tanned epidermis and an artificial membrane.
Study source: subject to peer review.

How was it conducted?

This study was carried out using a model of reconstructed, human-tanned epidermis and an artificial membrane. Melaline® was applied to the epidermis surface for four days, during which half of the tissues were exposed to UV irradiation (UVA, UVB, UV-visible & Infrared rays) using a solar simulator.

What benefits were they seeking?

Scientists set out to evaluate the impact of Melaline® on skin pigmentation, as well as assessing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and skin-penetration capabilities.

What did they find?

The study found that Melaline® enhances natural skin protection against UV rays, protects against inflammation, increases the skin's antioxidant barrier, and intensifies and accelerates tanning by stimulating melanogenesis - the biological process where melanin is produced by specialised cells in the body called ‘melanocytes’.

INCREASED MELALIN CONTENT

Researchers saw that Melaline®:

  • Increased melanin content in tissues by 13.7%
  • and by 10.8% when combined with UV exposure.

Not only did they see it penetrate the epidermis, but it also remained there without going into the underlying tissues.

ENHANCED ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION

It also protected against oxidative damage induced by UV irradiation, offering 16.9% protection and demonstrated antioxidant action without UV exposure.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY SUPPORT

Melaline® demonstrated strong protection from inflammatory stress caused by UV exposure, reducing TNF-alpha levels by 71.04%.

SIGNIFICANT PENETRATION

The product showed significant penetration into both the in vitro reconstructed human tanned epidermis and artificial membrane, with 29.58% of melanin found in the artificial membrane during the PAMPA test.
